The Rockhouse Foundation Works To Build An Inclusive Educational Community in Negril
On Tuesday, October 30, 2018, Rockhouse Foundation hosted the foundation’s 14th annual dinner to raise money for its beneficiary, the children of Jamaica. The Foundation to date raised $4.5 million U.S.D to fund projects to improve education in Negril. Most notable is the renovations of six schools (including Negril All Age School, Negril Basic School, Little Bay All Age School, Moreland Hill Primary and the Bunch of Stars E.C.I.) and the Negril Community Library. The Foundation’s most recent endeavor encompassed the building of a new school, Savanna-La-Mar Inclusive Infant Academy (SIIA). The later, contains an inclusive curriculum, offering educational opportunities for children with disabilities. Building a community that is inclusive for all children, lies at the heart of the Rockhouse Foundation’s mission. More After The Jump…

Johnny Osbourne & Tarrus Riley Rock Miss Lily’s Variety Anniversary Bash
Last Night Come In Like A Stage Show
Last night Miss Lily’s Variety and Melvin’s Juice Box celebrated its first anniversary in fine style with an all-day party that was broadcast live on RadioLily.com. The place was packed with reggae royalty from early out. Dean Fraser and Tarrus Riley mingled with Clive Chin and Carol Dodd, who blessed the place with some amazing never-before-heard Studio One rarities (including “In My Fathers House” and “Ungodly King” by Dennis Brown, a new version of “Gorgon” by Cornell Campbell, “Mix It Up” by J.D. Smoothe, and the original “Shank-I-Sheck” instrumental by Roy Burroughs). Noel Alphonso, son of the late great Roland Alphonso (whose birthday was also last night) was in the place along with the whole Miss Lily’s family to enjoy one-of-a-kind live performances by the one and only Johnny Osbourne and Tarrus Riley—up close and personal with DJ Max Glazer at the controls. When the good folks at RadioLily.com aren’t playing the people’s music (night and day) or playing host to reggae royalty that passes through Miss Lily’s restaurant (and the next-door chill spot Miss Lily’s Variety / Melvin’s Juicebar) on the regular, they’re hosting art exhibitions, publishing recherche books, and curating reggae-dancehall-soca anthologies like the oh-so-crucial Miss Lily’s Family Style Vol. 1. The Girls Them Sugar Nices Up The Strictly Boomshots Show
It’s been three years since Beenie Man performed in NYC. But now that his visa issues are all sorted out the King of the Dancehall is back with a vengeance. Over the weekend he rocked Roy Wilkins Park in Queens alongside Beres Hammond, Jimmy Cliff, and Gladys Knight. Then last night he passed through Radio Lily to hold a vibes, nyam some food, and admire the ladies—not necessarily in that order. Once Beenie stepped up in front of that sound system something just took over. Whether you’re on Hagley Park Road or Houston Street, there’s no mistaking that real dancehall culture when you get it live and direct. Photos and video by the man called Gizmo after the jump.

WATCH THIS: Yami Bolo “True Love” Pon Radio Lily
The Roots Reggae Legend Nices Up Miss Lily’s Variety
Yami Bolo has been singing classic reggae cuts since his days at Sugar Minott’s Youth Promotions. You already know his tunes like “When A Man’s in Love” on the Stalag riddim, which Mad Lion sampled for his 90s hip-hop banger “Take It Easy.” What you may not know is that he also wrote and recorded the song “True Love” before his bredren White Mice made it a big hit in the dance. This week Mr. Bolo passed through the Strictly Boomshots show for an in-depth interview and blessed the place with some selections off his album Crucial Duets Vol. 1—and he even did a crucial duet with yours truly. HEAR THIS: Wilfred Limonious “Young Love”
Who Knew That Dancehall’s Greatest Graphic Artist Was A Wicked Singer Too?
When Matt Goias sent me this tune via email the subject line read simply “Peep The Singer,” I had no idea what to make of it. On first listen “Young Love” sounded like just another reggae rarity — a slightly randy lover’s rock selection about a lonely old man man who’s had his eye on a pretty young thing for years. But then Matt forwarded the seven-inch single’s label, lovingly rendered in shades of blue. No doubt about it, that’s the work of Limonious, the undisputed champion of dancehall album art. The prolific—and sadly now deceased—artist has attracted something of a cult following. And that was before we knew he could sing too.
