HEAR THIS: King Addies Presents Rodney Price AKA Bounty Killer Dubplate Mix

Addies Bad From Dem Time Till Now, Who Nuh Like It Defend It

The Biltmore Era is known as the Golden Era and most competitive period of the Sound Clash Industry extending from the late ’80s to 1996. Such clashes were kept in four major venues throughout New York City—Tilden Ballroom, Starlite Ballroom, Flamingo Ballroom and most importantly the Biltmore Ballroom. As the “Mecca” of the industry, the era contained many talented and entertaining sound systems all of which rightfully deserve their place in the history books. However, none has been more dominant and respected as King Addies. They were the sound that made upcoming selectors believe that you didn’t have to be a Jamaican based sound system to make it to the top of the industry. Of all the artists represented in their devastating dubplate collection, one loomed larger than all the others: The Warlord, a.k.a. Bounty Killer.  Audio After The Jump… Read more »

HEAR THIS: Gyptian "Sex, Love & Reggae" Mixtape

Who Says Gyptian Only Makes Love Songs

Known for his soulful voice, most would expect a Gyptian mixtape to be full of nothing but love songs or songs dedicated to women in general; not that there’s anything wrong with that. Love is a beautiful thing, and some would argue that music is “all about the girls.” On his just released “Sex, Love & Reggae” mix Gyptian makes sure to drop something for all reggae lovers, but the real treat is that Gyptian choose to pair his soothing voice over some classic riddims. Add this to your Hump Day playlist and thank us later. Stream And Download After The Jump… Read more »

HEAR THIS: The Incomparable Shakespeare “Murderer”

BK Rapper Reps For Trayvon Over a Barrington, Beenie, Buju Mashup
IncomparableShakespeareMurderer
The tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s murder and subsequent miscarriage of justice has inspired much outrage and more than a few good songs, the latest being this heatrock from The Incomparable Shakespeare, a young rapper from Brooklyn’s Vandevere housing projects. His use of various dancehall “murder” anthems helps drive home the point behind his lyrics of fury. Shaky baby is spitting that murder murder murder. Tun it up. Loud. HEAR THIS: Steel Pulse “Put Your Hoodies On (4 Trayvon)”

Handsworth Revolutionists Still Asking: “Does Not Justice Stand For All”?
CIS:E.1492-2010[Photograph by Dennis Morris]
When Steel Pulse first burst out of Birmingham in 1975, they were the most militant reggae group in England. Their debut album, Handsworth Revolution set a tone of uncompromising rebel music with tracks like “Ku Klux Klan.” The band would sometimes throw on Klansmen’s hoods when performing the tune live, making a dreadfully powerful statement and striking fear into the hearts of downpressors worldwide. After dabbling in lighter fare like “Rollerskates,” the Pulse is back on that hood shit, but this time in tribute to Trayvon Martin. David “Dread” Hinds describes their new song, “Put Your Hoodies On [4 Trayvon],” as “a plea for justice. Steel Pulse has been campaigning and watching this case since February 26th 2012. The fact is that an innocent teenager is dead, shot by a man who was playing vigilante—pursuing the teenager around the neighborhood despite being advised against it by the authorities. This could well end up as the day justice was killed once again in a Jim Crow. We sensed the result  but despite the outcome of the trial, the truth remains the truth, and the ghost of justice will haunt this town of Sanford, Florida forever.” Audio & Download Link After The Jump… Read more »
