Trouble in Terminal 8
Last night, while the fastest man alive, Usain Bolt, was winning another medal in Rio, chaos broke out inside Terminal 8 at New York’s JFK Airport and one of the city’s busiest transit hubs had to be evacuated. Coincidence? We think not. Shortly before midnight last night, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey posted the “all clear” on their official Twitter account. “Preliminary inevstigation does not indicate shots were fired at JFK. There are no injuries. At this time, no gun shells or other evidence of shots fired has been found. The terminal was evacuated out of an abundance of caution… Investigation continues.” So what happened? Video After The Jump…
Quoting social media reports on the scene, the UK’s Daily Mirror is reporting that Usain Bolt’s win sparked such a celebration amongst his fans in Jamaica, Queens that all the gun salutes were mistaken for a terrorist attack. Once some nervous travelers rang the alarm, there was no turning back. Port Authority police, the New York Police Department had its Hercules Strike teams, Critical Response Command, Strategic Response Group, Emergency Service Unit and patrol cops on the scene, according to New York law enforcement officials. Police searched and cleared all terminals just before midnight, but did not find anything. How crazy did it get last night? Hundreds of people fled the terminal leaving their luggage behind. A KLM flight on the tarmac deployed chutes and evacuated passengers. People who were stranded aboard their flights were able to leave the airport early Monday morning to head home or to hotels in Manhattan. All affected terminals resumed operations today, but only a few media outlets are telling the truth about what happened. So lick a shot for Bolt—and the brave first responders keeping us all safe!
