HEAR THIS: Queen Ifrica “Freedom of Speech”
The Queen Fires Back At Her Critics
Queen Ifrica has been under fire of late for comments she made during an official “Grand Gala” event celebrating Jamaica’s independence at the National Stadium. Performing before a crowd estimated at 20,000 —including Prime Minister Portai Simpson-Miller and numerous other government officials—Ifrica spoke out in favor of ganja decriminalization and also urged the prime minister not to repeal Jamaica’s long-standing anti sodomy law. Coming just two weeks after a cross-dressing youth known as the Gully Queen was stabbed and shot to death by an angry mob, Queen Ifrica’s remarks touched off a firestorm of controversy. Jamaica’s Minister of Culture even issued an official statement expressing regret over her comments. Ifrica has defended her position in the press, and now she’s made a song asserting her right to express her views. Audio After The Jump… (more…) -
HEAR THIS: Tessanne Chin “Back To My Love”
Treat Yourself To Lovers Rock At Its Finest
Smart Move Productions’ “I Believe” Riddim is a rich, melodic, home-cooked one-drop track that bubbles like soup in a pot. In other words it’s the perfect backdrop for one of reggae’s sultriest voices to do what she does better than just about anybody. “The skies could be falling,” Tessanne sings, “the mountains come tumbling down, the rivers are running wild, and the seas could overrun.” Yes. Listening to her voice, we get the feeling that Tessanne loves truly madly deeply. And we could listen to her all day. In fact, maybe we will. Audio After The Jump… -
HEAR THIS: Ninja Man “Badman Law” (Bad Cowboy Riddim)
Man A Real Badman Listen Badman Law
Ninja Man has been keeping himself very busy this year and seized every opportunity to remind DJs who is the baddest in the business. The airwaves still haven’t cooled off from the Don Gorgan’s last lyrical outing “Ninja Mi Ninja” (peep the video below) now today we get another tune cementing how bad Ninja really is, the appropriately titled “Badman Law.” Up to his usual tricks Ninja chats with his signature braggadocious flair even managing to give the Worlboss a shout out with:
“Me Mek Kartel Wear Brand In There, So All Gaza Fans Gwan Hang In There.”
One thing is clear, Ninja Man hasn’t fallen off, and the rate he is going he’ll probably lay down his life before he lets anyone beat him in a clash. Run Tune After The Jump… (more…)

HEAR THIS: Shaggy ft. Ne-Yo “You Girl”
Mr. Boombastic Links With The Perfect Gentlemen, And It’s All About The Girls—As Usual
Shaggy’s really pulling out all the stops for his new classical roots reggae album with riddims laid down by Sly & Robbie and production by Sting International and Lenky. First he gave us “Can’t Fight This Feeling” featuring Beres Hammond. Now he’s just dropped a sweet lover’s rock selection called “You Girl” featuring R&B star Ne-Yo. It’s nice to hear a U.S. singer sounding so comfortable with the one-drop groove. Looks like Shaggy has another hit on his hands. And having heard most of the album, we can confirm there’s a lot more where that came from. Audio After The Jump…

A$AP Ferg Mashes Up Trillectro Fest in Washington D.C.
Trap God Drops Today—You Have Been Warned
A$AP Ferg drops his debut album Trap Lord today and he’s all set to take the A$AP Worldwide movement to another level. He first caught our attention with his street banger “Shabba” and we just had to sit down and reason with him about his love for the dancehall emperor. (Turns out Ferg comes from a Trinidadian household and used to vacation in MoBay as a youth.) Since that time the buzz on Ferg has only gotten louder. Just the other day Fergenstein took the stage at the Trillectro Music Festival in Washington D.C. and pandemonium ensued. In other words, he shelled down the place. Trillectro nuh good again. Or as the capo Joe LaPuma observed on Twitter, “This is what a hit looks like.” Video After The Jump… (more…)

HEAR THIS: Sean Paul ft. Damian “Jr Gong” Marley “Riot”
Dutty Paul and Gongzilla Connect to Defend The Youth Dem
Opening with a rough tough King Tubby sample straight from the dungeons of dub, “Riot” quickly progresses to a fast-chatting dancehall raveup courtesy of Sean Paul and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley—two of dancehall’s most reliable hitmakers joining forces for the first time in history. And they’re not just talking about dancing and smoking, this tune’s all about delivering a simple message to the bigger heads: “Deal with the youth them right or else a riot gwine start.” An unfinished version of this track leaked earlier this week, but we’ve got the official mastered version. FLASHBACK FIRDAY: Vybz Kartel Feat. Wayne Marshall “New Millenium”
Last week Kartel dropped a scathing verse on Busta Rhymes Twerk It (Remix) reminding us even though he’s behind bars he’s still a force in the dancehall realm. Today we take back to when Kartel was making a name for himself, back when it seemed that every riddim Don Corleone produced was mad specifically for Kartel. The riddim which introduced the world to the Gaza Boss was the Krazy Riddim with his breakout hit “New Millenium” featuring Wayne Marshall. Now Kartel and Wayne both appeared on another tune over the Krazy Riddim called “Why You Doing It” which was often played back to back that many believed it was all one song. He may be a few shades lighter but the lyrics was always there – Tune After The Jump… (more…)
