The man called Ewart Beckford, O.D. a.k.a. Daddy U-Roy raised the art of toasting to new heights. He didn’t just spit a few phrases here and there, he rode the riddim from the starting gate to the last furlong. And he was the first DJ to make hit records. In 1970, three U-Roy singles recorded for Duke Reid held the top three spots on the Jamaican charts—simulatenously.
Just the other day, while he was blessing the up-and-coming Green Lion Sound system with a few hard-to-obtain dubplate specials, Daddy Roy took time out to drop science about slackness in the dancehall. “As far as the youths… You don’t want to keep preaching this gun thing into them head. The saying is that children live what they learn. If you keep telling them about ‘Man fi Dead.’ And ‘My Glock inna your mouth.’
And ‘Bullet! Bullet! Bullet!’ Is like you say shoot people, like that’s good. Which is not good!” And as for the X-rated behavior in the dancehall: “I never have no idea that dance go like this: ‘Show you G-String gal!’ And she pull down her skirt and show you her drawers… I think the people who follow the selector are just as stupid as the selector!”
Who can’t hear will feel, and who the cap fit, let them wear it. Zeen?
