Spice and Shaggy Shell Down Hot 97 On The Reggae & Soca Tip 2021

Ever since it dropped last May, Spice’s smash single “Go Down Deh“—featuring multiplatinum superstars Shaggy and Sean Paul—has been the dancehall song of the summer. This past Friday night, Spice and Shaggy made history by performing the song together, live onstage for the first time.  The setting was Hot 97’s annual On Da Reggae and Soca Tip concert, hosted by Bobby Konders & Jabba of the Massive B family as usual. Year after year, On The Reggae Tip has been the official jump-off for the Labor Day Weekend festivities, as the biggest stars from Jamaica, Trinidad, and the whole Caribbean to come together to entertain the New York massive.  But this year’s show will go down as one of the most memorable ever. Video and Photos After The Jump… 

Last year’s show had to be postponed due to the pandemic, as was the big West Indian Day Parade on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. Sadly, the parade is a no-go again for 2021, but this year Hot 97 and the Massive B fam were able to make sure the show came back strong to represent the culture in one of the greatest reggae, dancehall, and soca cities in the world—New York City. The beautiful Ford Ampitheater in Coney Island was full of vibes as Pritty di General warmed up the crowd, who were excited to see some live dancehall after a long hiatus. Pritty was followed by a series of mind-blowing performances from top-ranking artists like Charly Black, who had the girls flippin’ like a Flip-a-Gram, Mr. Vegas, who came dressed to impress as he took the crowd on a journey through some of his classic 90s dancehall hits, TeeJay the UpTop Boss who stayed in his “Owna Lane,” and had the place brain’. Of course Nailah Black and Patrice Roberts got the soca posse jumpin’. But the night belonged to Queen of the Dancehall Spice, who has so many hits she hardly had enough time to run through them all. Of course her dancers were off the chain and when Spice brought out Shaggy the place went crazy. Shaggy in turn brought out some surprise guests include Noah Powa, Kemar Highcon, and the rising NY star Capella Grey, who performed his breakthrough hit “Gyalis.” All in all it was a magical evening.
