Jah9: Jazz on Dub

Roots Reggae Queen, Jah9 is all set and ready to deliver a Holistic Dub Experience to her New York fans at Milk River Restaurant & Lounge tonight!

Jazz and Dub blends together for a musical massage with an extraordinary sound. The slow sound waves of dub, allow the lyrics to ride over the beat, in a synchronized fashion. This speed enables the listener to focus on the lyrics, so it comes as no surprise that, Janine “Jah9” Cunningham, entitled her East Coast Tour, “Jazz on Dub.” The tour to promote her debut album, “New Name” hits Brooklyn, New York tonight. More After The Jump…

The album’s title track produced by Rory “Stone Love” Gilligan, is a tribute to ” The Conquering  Lion of  the Tribe of Judah, His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, King of Kings of Ethiopia, Elect of God.” (Lee, 1983)* The video directed by Kush Asher brings the song lyrics to life.

A huge fan favorite, “Steamers A Bubble” discusses the mystic steam from green.

But the song about the fruit of the spirit, entitled, “Avocado,” is by far the break out tune for this artist:

Avocado was written at my breakfast table, three years ago, the first avocado of the summer season, was my inspiration for the lyrics. It’s a song about natural livity, humility and the characteristics of a lion we can appreciate; not necessarily, who can give you the most money, but who gives you attention and makes you feel special based on the things you like, like your favorite food, who makes you feel safe and can defend you. Along with my background singers: Debronique N. Ellis, Nadya Forbes and Sherece Cowan, representing three different types of modest and royal natural beauty, coming together, collectively, to celebrate those characteristics of a lion; with a fun and playful vibe.” –Jah9

Besides the exceptional lyrics, the instrumental aspect of the song is soothing to the ear, with Kirk Bennett on drums (played drums on all the tracks of “New Name”) and Dean Fraser and Nambo Robinson on horns. The song was produced by Rory “Stone Love” Gilligan  and the vibrantly, colorful, video shot in “Red Hills” was directed by Samo “Kush-I” Johnson of Destination Roots. This  visual representation of reggae jazz,  sets the bar high above the clouds, with elements of  spirituality, health, sex appeal and fashion:

“But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” –Galatians 5:22-23

As she sets forth to embark on her northeastern tour of the United States, Jah9 wants fans to expect:

a rich, rich supply of  roots, Drum and Bass music, dub and guitar. My music is a testimony of my livity and faith in Rastafari. I am a yogi so there will be elements of breathing, elements of my livity. I will share, exerpts from His Majesty’s speeches and Dub treatment.”-Jah9
