Tobago Jazz Experience Kicks Off This Week

Soca, Reggae, and R&B in A Lush Tropical Setting

The island of Trinidad is synonymous with carnival and you may still be recovering from February’s ordeal, but in the month of April the focus shifts to the beautifully laid-back sister island of Tobago where it’s all about the Jazz Experience. Sun, sea, sand and soca – whats not to love!?!?! This year the Tobago Jazz Experience sees appearances from international acts India Arie and Melanie Fiona—both of whom have worked with major names in the reggae world such as the Morgan Heritage fam & the Marleys. Melanie is a two-time Grammy winner who sang the sultry duet “No Cigarette Smoke” with Stephen Marley. She recently dropped a new video for “Wrong Side of a Love Song,” the latest single from her acclaimed album, The MF Life. She performs on April 26th

April 27th will be headlined by calypso icon Super Blue, who will share the bill with the Roy Cape All-Stars featuring Blaxx whose big booming voice makes everybody “Tusty” for more.

Sailing in from the island next door, Freddie McGregor will also be performing on world music day. Jamaica’s reggae legend is currently touring in support of his new album The Captain.

April 28 will be a special treat as Dionne Warwick steps on to the stage, whose work with Burt Bacharach has made her a legend. She’s still going strong after a half century in the business. You don’t need to be a psychic to know hers will be a performance to remember. That same night will see a live set from India Arie, whose new album, Songversation is due out this June. The first single “Cocoa Butter,” is already making waves. The four-time Grammy-winner will bring all her “Strength Courage and Wisdom” to the stage and show us why she’s “not your average girl from the video.”

On the local front Kes the Band will be rocking out. Their fresh blend of soca, reggae, R&B and pop is winning them fans around the world. Lead singer Kees Dieffenthaler recently released a song on Shaggy’s Calabash riddim. It’s called “Can’t Wait” and this one is definitely for the girls. Also on the bill: Super Blue’s daughter Fayann Lyons and her husband Bunji Garlin, whose tune “Differentology” was a carnival favorite this year.
