Lincoln Sugar Minott: Respect The Architect

Who Do You Think Built This Dancehall Style?

Water’s pouring down in Montego Bay just a few hours before the start of Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest 2010. But I can’t tell if it’s rain from the skies or tears from my eyes. The real godfather of the dancehall, Sugar Minott, passed away last week Saturday, and I sincerely hope somebody remembers to big the man up tonight. Check this video of Sugar at work in Montego Bay, Reggae Sunsplash 1983. Nobody worked a stage harder. Nobody gave more. Style pon top of style. Sugar set the standard in this dancehall business, establishing the Youth Promotions sound system, grooming future champions like Tenor Saw. It’s been a while since he worked the big festival stages but he could make a street corner dance feel like Carnegie Hall. Rock on Mr. Minott.
