HEAR THIS: Vybz Kartel “Gaza Ting-A-Ling”

Can Addi Di Teacha step in Shabba’s shoes?

While dancehall has always freely recycled riddims, hooks, styles and patterns, it’s rare to see a faithful homage by a toppa top artist. Producer Craig “Leftside” Parkes built his new “School Bell” riddim as a tribute to Shabba Ranks’ 1992 classic “Ting A Ling,” and Vybz Kartel boldly delivers a booming homage to one of the dancehall legend’s bonafide boomshots. When Kartel updated Simpleton’s “Coca Cola Shape” on Leftside’s “Throwback Jiggy” riddim with his extra-slack track “Tight Pussy Girls,” that was one thing. But with “Gaza Ting-A-Ling” he’s done a more or less straight-up cover of Shabba’s original. Is the Teacha out of his class? There is something a little bit face-ty about touching one of Shabba’s classics. Still, I have to admit, Addi did the tune justice. But don’t take my word for it. Run the track…
