The Sojah Conquers New Territory in NYC
Last week Konshens stormed the stage at SOB’s in NYC as part of Hot 97’s “Who’s Next Live” showcase. Although the vibes weren’t quite as nice as when he stopped by Radio Lily a few months back for the Strictly Boomshots Show, it was a very good look for the young dancehall artist, whose single “Gal A Bubble” is enjoying some nice rotation on New York radio waves. Brownsville’s Own B-A-double-R-Y Kicks Ballistics Over a Foundation Riddim
BRNGTN is a BK-based rapper who describes his style as “Experimental / Hip Hop / Reggae.” Considering how much wack rapping has been done over reggae beats, getting it this right is somewhat of an experiment. His rhymes connect because they avoid cliche and get right to the heart of the “Everyday Struggle” between good and evil that each of us goes through. Throw that over a hard-hitting version of the “Unchained” riddim and you can’t lose. This tune also supports my theory that remakes of a foundation riddim tracks should be in harmony with the concept of the original song. The musicians played the riddim that way for a reason. Gallery: Ajamu Photographs The West Indian Day Parade
From Port of Spain in Trinidad to Notting Hill in London, Carnival is a worldwide phenomenon. We all need a time and place to get on bad, right? Of course every city has their own unique way of wilding out—but you already know nobody goes harder than Brooklyn USA. You’ve got zombies and stilt walkers and bugged out Brooklynites and hot girls in their barely theres as Grand Marshalls Harry Belafonte and Machel Montano rub shoulders with Andrew Cuomo and police commissioner Ray Kelly. Unfortunately this year’s event was marred by violence—with two people stabbed to death and two others wounded by gunfire. Despite those tragedies, the rest of us had a great time. Marlon “Ajamu” Myrie has been shooting (with a camera) on Eastern Parkway for years, and he’s not only got an artist’s eye, he’s got a special gift for charming the ladies, as you’ll notice in this massive 2012 gallery. NY Selector Turned DJ Has A Hit On His Hands
Following in the tradition of Sanchez, Chicken Chest, and Tony Matterhorn, Noah Powa is a selector who made the jump to recording artist. His tune “I Care Zero” has been devastating the dancehalls of late. The video may look a teensy bit low-budget, but just how much do you suppose Mr. Powa cares about that? (more…)
