Other Winners Include Tinie Tempeh, Wiley, Rudimental, Fuse ODG, Naughty Boy, and Laura Mvula

This Weekend the UK celebrated the 18th staging of the MOBO—Music Of Black Origin—Awards. This year Scotland’s capital Glasgow played host and was rammed with celebrities galore—from Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora to So Solid Crew and Ms Dynamite. Craig David even flew in from Miami to present an award. It’s been an exciting year for reggae and the nominees for the Best Reggae Act category were right on point for 2013 making this category a real nail-biter. The competition was tough between Mavado, Stylo G, Sean Paul, Popcaan and Tarrus Riley—and as they say “may the best man win.” So congrats to Sean Paul for taking that home. This makes it a cool 3 times for Sean Paul. Unfortunately Dutty Paul didn’t make it to Glasgow to receive his award in person but he did send through a video of his acceptance speech—RRRRRRRRRR! (always wonder how the organisers keep that under wraps!) Other highlights from the event included Tinie Tempah taking home ‘Best UK Hip Hop/Grime,’ Rudimental taking home “Best Album,” Fuse ODG taking home “Best African Act” Naughty Boy Taking Home “Best Video” Wiley taking home “Best Male Act” and Laura Mvula taking home “Best R&B/Soul Act” & “Best Female.” Check here for full list. All in a days work—back with the MOBOs next year! • Brit Reggae Awards 2013

    Brit Reggae Awards 2013

The UK Reggae Biz Honors its Own

February is reggae month, so what better time of year for the British Reggae Industry Awards to take place? Last night a who’s who of reggae artists and shot-callers came together at the IndigO2 to give recognition to the workin’ peeps in the biz. The evening was packed with good vibes from award presentations to stage performances. One of My fave’s of the night was watching the Scottish band I Foundation. It’s been a minute since Scottish reggae’s been on the radio! They were super cute and they have a sense of humour too: walking past them backstage I overheard one of them saying “I think we need to go to Scotland to get some sun.” Maybe they were serious!?! Anyone who was out on the town in London last night knows it was bloody freezing!

David Rodigan turned up to collect his award for “Best Male Radio Personality.” Maxi Priest won “Best Male Vocalist.” Alton Ellis’s daughter Lovella picked up “Best Female newcomer” and she also collected “Best Male newcomer” for her brother Christopher Ellis—who was nominated for not 1 but 3 categories. His single “English” was up for best single, and he was also up for best British Video for his cover of his father’s “Williow Tree.” Looks like the Ghetto youth is makin’ moves, just in time for the launch of the Ghetto Youths album next Tuesday. Skibu bagged Best Album & Video, Gappy Ranks received Best MC and Best Single and Jah Shaka took home the award for “Best British Sound System.” Overall it was a night of good vibes and happy sounds in the place. As the compere said, “We nah pay fe scream—it free!” Full List of Winners & Video Interviews After The Jump…

They will be joined by Bruno Mars, who has called Marley “one of the greatest songwriters ever,”  and Sting, whose work with The Police helped to bring reggae music to the rock and pop radio. Rihanna has often expressed her admiration for Marley and the Tuff Gong’s impact on her music and her life. She performed his classic “Redemption Song,” to help raise money for Haitian earthquake survivors and even showed her love by wearing a custom-made Bob Marley dress during her SNL performance. Who Will Be Named Best Reggae Artist At The 2010 Soul Train Awards?

Nuff respect to the original Don (Cornelius). The Soul Train Awards ceremony takes place this Wedensday in Atlanta. And while Usher and Alicia Keys lead all nominees this year, we’re focused one of the newer categories. Last year Sean Paul walked away with the first ever Soul Train Award for Best Reggae Artist. This year’s nominees include Gyptian, Mr. Vegas, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Vybz Kartel, Gramps Morgan, and Jah Cure—a diverse mix of roots reggae, soul, lovers’ rock and straight-up dancehall, and a better representation than most other major awards shows.
