Popcaan Performs Unplugged at Kingston Pop-Up Shop

Last Thursday in Kingston, Jamaica, dancehall star Popcaan gave his fans an early Christmas present when he turned up to a pop-up shop for his TR8  collab with RGAT Chains. In lieu of the usual high-energy performances he delivered at Tuesday night’s Ghetto Splash and the Saturday night Major Lazer show in Kingston, the Unruly Boss performed what was planned to be a “short” acoustic set that basically turned into the world’s first Popcaan Unplugged concert. A sizeable crowd —including Skrillex, whose OWSLA line with Massiv was also featured at the pop-up, as well as Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Jillionaire of Major Lazer—spent the evening chilling in the Manor Park Plaza parking lot to take in opening acts Chi Ching Ching (who took the stage rocking a TR8NESS chain), Dre Island, and Runkuss. Then it was time for the main event: Accompanied by a percussionst, acoustic guitarist, and some gentle keyboard chords, Popcaan gave a whole new sound to classic dancehall cuts like “Dream” and “Gangsta City” as well as a generous selection of tunes from his debut album, Where We Come From, and his latest hit “R.I.P.”

“Big up all the Rastaman in the house,” he said at one point, then, referring to himself, he added, “This is a Rastaman up here now.” The moment was reminiscent of Buju Banton’s pivotal Til Shiloh album, when a hardcore dancehall don began to explore a more spiritual direction. As the former Vybz Kartel protege branched out in a different style and fashion, the depth of Popcaan’s lyrics was revealed to the fullest. Those who witnessed this show will not soon forget it.
