Musical Masquerade likes his privacy. A mysterious figure who wears a creepy mask to conceal his identity in photos, MM says he’s worked as a songwriter and producer for years. For reasons that remain unclear he recently decided to start anew, pushing out his polished pop-leaning dancehall productions under a different identity. “There are red tape and yellow tape and politics that affect music,” the enigmatic producer stated in a recent interview. “So I decided to take on a new challenge and create something new without using my past successes and projects as the spear head. Snort of like Snoop Dogg versus Snoop Lion. Just a new path.” His forthcoming project, Elements of Reggae, has already given us the hit single “No Other Like You” by Rayvon and Red Fox. Now comes another collaboration that brings together dancehall and hip-hop artists of the highest ranks with a next-level sound. On “Just Like Magic” Mavado sings a melodic refrain for the ladies then Kiss steps in to spit a hot 16. “It’s always a great pleasure working with people who are professional and who aim to make the best music,” said Musical Masquerade. “The collaboration came about from an idea to blend the powerful, unique and unmistakable voices from reggae and hip hop and put them together on a reggae track. Actions speak louder than words, and when it comes to teaching the youths, Barrington Levy is a man of action. His 80s dancehall classic on Witty’s digital lick of the “Mr Bassie” riddim expressed Barrington’s hearfelt desire to see music “teach the youths them how to live, teach the youths them how to survive.” At the same time Mr. Levy’s song was a rebuke of artists who choose to use the gift of music to spread slack irrelevant teachings: “No put it deh no put them no weh / No bend down just keep them to the ground,” he sang with righteous indignation. “Can’t you see the time we’re living in, the people are suffering?” This Thursday June 6th Barrington Levy will continue his mission to teach the youths by performing live to benefit the Rockhouse Foundation. The foundation transforms the places where Jamaica’s children learn and supports the people who teach them. 2013 marks the Rockhouse Foundation’s ten-year anniversary. To date, the Foundation has entirely transformed and modernized four schools – Negril All Age School, Negril Basic School, Little Bay All Age and the Bunch of Stars E.C.I. – along with a complete renovation and expansion of the Negril Community Library. All projects combined, the Rockhouse Foundation directly impacts the lives of thousands of young people and their families. An energetic, electric crowd awaited the arrival of Midnite for the “Late Night Ghetto Session” at the B.B.King Blues Club located in the heart of New York City’s Time Square. Appropriately enough, the band hit the stage around midnight, with lead vocalist Vaughn Benjamin and his brother, producer/vocalist/dub arranger Ron Benjamin on bass and keys, accompanied by drummer Christian Molina, guitarists Edmund Fieulleteau and Edwin Byron, and keyboardist Lyndon Williams aka Ras L. As an audience member shouted “Bring It Out!” the band began to play raw instrumentation without any sugar-coating over a pulsating bassline. Ghetto Youths International is proud to announce U.S. dates for the “Set Up Shop” Tour. The tour is set to touch down on states like Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada and will feature performances by rising Ghetto Youths Crew members Wayne Marshall, Jo Mersa, Black-Am-I and Christopher Ellis and of course reggae heavyweights Damian “Jr Gong” and Stephen “Ragga” Marley.
