Bruno Mars’s multiplatinum debut album, Doo-Wops and Hooligans, gets filed under “Pop” on the iTunes Music Store, but if you think you hear a lot of reggae on it, you’re right. And it’s no addident. “I was in a reggae band in high school,” Mars told Toure in a recent interview. “Hawaii is really like Bob Marley-ville. [laughs] And for me personally, I think Bob Marley doesn’t get enough credit as a songwriter. I think he’s one of the greatest songwriters ever because of the melody and the simplicity and the message and the emotion that he put behind his music. I’m a fan of him as well as Beres Hammond and Peter Tosh—there’s a lot of other cats.
