Drake Brings Out Skepta to Shutdown London's Wireless Festival

Drizzy Is The Latest Superstar to Link With Boy Better Know

According to NME, Drake brought out London grime MC Skepta to perform “Shutdown” during his set at London’s Wireless Festival in Finsbury Park July 3rd. OVO affiliate Partynextdoor joined Drake on one song as did iLoveMakonnen, who performed ‘Tuesday’ with his new label boss. However, the biggest reaction was by far when Skepta came out. Drake wore a Boy Better Know T-Shirt and chatted in some UK slang: “Man’s never been in Finsbury when it’s shutdown,” said Drake as the song began. Video After The Jump… Read more »

UK Bad Gyal In The Mood For Murderation

This time she teams up with grime veteran Diesel D-Power. #Nang. Audio After the Jump… Read more »

UK Reggae Rebel Rocks London With Tarrus Riley, Talks “Break The Chain” EP With Reshma B

Tarrus Riley’s Love Situation tour passes through the UK tonight at the Forum in Kentish Town. Always ready to support rising talent, Singy Singy’s opening acts include Jamaican songstress Alaine and a young UK rebel by the name of Randy Valentine. RV’s been making waves with his powerful voice and no-nonsense approach to the music, as first glimpsed on his 2012 mixtape Bring Back the Love, which showcased the young artist’s writing and vocal abilities against some timeless Studio One instrumentals. His Break The Chain EP dropped in May and shot straight to No. 1 in Germany, Sweden, Norway, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland’s iTunes Reggae charts. The EP also reached No2 in Italy, and No3 in both Canada and the UK. RV’s ‘Break The Chain Tour’ kicked off in May, and he’s done shows in 20 countries all over Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, France, and the UK. In the first of his chats with Reshma B, Randy talks about his musical influences and why he’s never going to sell his soul (or anything else) for radio play. Video After The Jump… Read more »

Reasoning With The Selector for London’s Mighty Saxon Studio International
TrevorSaxBoomshots
“I like to play the vinyls,” says Trevor Sax of Saxon Studio International. If you don’t believe him, you need to brush up your sound system history. Founded in 1976 as the Imperial Rockers, by Dennis Rowe and Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis, the sound changed its name to Saxon Studio International two years later. They are a cornerstone of the UK reggae industry, shining a light on future stars like Peter King, Papa Levi, Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture, and Maxi Priest. Trevor Sax joined up in 1981. Our friends over at Animal New York tell us this may be Sax’s first interview ever, and we’ve got no reason to doubt them. “He gave us a glimpse into his vinyl collection, which is so massive that records are piled in virtually in every room. Some are even stowed away behind hidden panels, which Sax laughingly pried open with a butter knife to exclaim: More records!” You get the idea. It’s a UK fing. Video After The Jump… Read more »

Reasoning With Peckings “Old School, New Blood”

Reshma B Chops It Up With The Peckings Family
peckingsBOOMSHOTS

Reshma B dropped by the legendary Peckings Studio 1 in Shepherd’s Bush, West London to chat with Chris Peckings about carrying on his family’s musical legacy. Chris tells how his father George Price aka Peckings grew up with the founding fathers of Jamaica’s reggae industry before moving to London in 1960, establishing what would become a UK reggae institution. Since then his sons have released a string of crucial tunes blending new talent like Bitty McLean, Gappy Ranks, and Christopher Ellis with vintage riddims—winning awards and mad respect along the way. Reshma B even got the scoop on how the link between Peckings and producers like Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid, and Prince Buster became so strong. Listen up as Duke and Chris Peckings break it all down for the ReggaeGirlAboutTown. Video After The Jump… Read more »

Ladies Love Stylo, Innit?
ReshmaStyloBoomshotsReshma B continues her epic 3-part interview with Stylo G, seeking to answer one simple question: Is Stylo all about the girls, or are the girls all about Stylo? HEAR THIS: Stylo G "Soundbwoy" Original Version + Di Genius Remix

Smell Something Burning? Must Be Them Speaker Boxes

“Tell them to pick up the pace—we a run the place” are the opening lines to Stylo G’s new single, and he ain’t wrong. Without a doubt, Stylo’s stuff has continued to escalate to the next level —I’m sure he’s keeping his competition on constant tiptoes. From “Call Mi a Yardie” to “Dash Out” to “Press Up” this dancehall South Londoner ain’t half bad yunno! On a serious note Stylo’s catalogue is shaping up to be a very good variety of very good music—which, frankly, is what it’s all about—but we’re not mad at the swag that comes with itThe new track is his first release on the 3Beat Records/Universal label, same team behind the recent success of such artists as Skepta, Sway & Duck Sauce. The original mix was produced by the Dutch crew Diztortion, and as an extra treat Stylo teamed up with Di Genius for a yardstyle remix. I gotta feeling things in Stylo’s world right now ain’t half bad either… Audio After the Jump…

WATCH THIS: Lady Chann & Shizzle “Supathug Freestyle” Video

UK Bashment Queen Teams Up with Shizzle For Vicious New Video
ChannShizzle

When I first heard this girl I felt I could crap my pants at any moment from hearing her chat, and things ain’t really changed on that front! So when this video turned up in my DM inbox I knew I needed to take some personal time out to deal with it. Chann always keeps it real & being a tough cookie hasn’t kept her from keeping feminine and sexy. When Chann and her bredren Shizzle recorded this track over the classic Neptunes beat for her latest mixtape Dun Dem Season: The Trilogy it was decided then and there to shoot a video for it—and how glad are we that she did?!? Chann Is a girl who never forgets who’s been there for her and where she came from. Her loyalties go deep, but don’t sleep. She can take you out with a verse if she has to and its seems like she’s “addressing a few issues” on this one. (“Nuttin’ long.”) Hate is the new love, and we might not know exactly who Chann’s chatting to, but I’m sure they know who they are. Video After The Jump… Read more »

WATCH THIS: Giants of Lovers Rock

Fresh From London: Reshma B Interviews Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, Peter Hunnigale, and More Reggae may have been born in Jamaica, but these days it’s a worldwide phenomenon. And the first place it spread was toEngland, where Jamaicans abroad created their own unique sound that came to be known as Lovers Rock. One of the first tunes to establish the sound was Louisa Mark’s “Caught You In A Lie” recorded in 1974 when the girl from West London was only a teenager. Smash hits like Janet Kay’s “Silly Games” and Carroll Thompson’s “Hopelessly In Love” kept the excitement building. It was a London thing, soon to be adopted all around the world. Japanese fans idolized the London girls and even the big boys from the Island—including legends like Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Sugar Minott—adopted the lovers rock sound. And the movement continues in 2012, with new voices like Lovella Ellis, daughter of the late great Alton Ellis stepping up to keep the legacy alive. On October 27th the IndigO2 hosted the Giants of Lovers Rock Part 4, bringing together some of the finest vocalists in England, singing of love and heartbreak and everything in between. Reshma B served as guest host, and she took us backstage for an all-access tour. What’s not to love? Video Interviews After The Jump… Read more »

Reshma B Reasons With Stylo G: Part 1 of 3
