HEAR THIS: Equiknoxx Music "Us In 2007" PREMIERE

Once Upon a Time In Jamaica

Like the mighty bird of prey who serves as the label’s logo/mascot, Equiknoxx Music has soared to higher heights in recent years. But today the dancehall production team of Nicholas “Bobby The Blackbird” Deane & Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair rewind back to the days when they flew mostly under the radar. Consider Us In 2007  a sonic snapshot, a moment in time—five tracks culled from the Equiknoxx archives and presented for the first time today on Boomshots. “We had no studio at the time,” recalls Blackbird. “Most of these songs were recorded at different studios…mainly Anchor Studios, Cutting Edge Records which is now Chimney Records, B-Rich Entertainment, and Versatile C&M Entertainment now Ancient Records/4th Generation Music. The time was simple; the fees were zero, gratitude is everything. As for us? What to say? “Brash” is the word that comes to mind. Well, depending on your definition. Loud, confident, spirited and maybe a little rude.” These songs are not about “Big Names”—Craigy T and Bay C of TOK fame pop up on two solo cuts; Tifa sings the hook for an artist known as C4 whose eccentric slang (“Man a real Gangle-arka”) steals the show; the only Ranks here is Shawnie. Never mind if you never heard of Rsenal or Lil J.O.E or Jahfrica or Tremma—just listen. The songs possess a raw urgency that is undeniable, and irresistible to fans of real dancehall music. And the production? It knoxx. These beats are ready to take on the world, but they were released at a moment when the world was not ready. “There are no rules, there are no gatekeepers, there are no expectations, there are no limits,” Blackbird summarizes. “We have the secrets of the sky, and laughter comes easy. Actions before words and the birds speak loudly and boldly because they are sure. We are sure about everything.”  Audio After The Jump…

“Crouching Tiger Meets Kill Bill Meets Jamaica Booty Pageant”

Tifa’s visuals are always next level, and this medley video featuring two songs—”The Champ” produced by Zj Chrome on the The Champ Riddim & “Big Bumper” on Birch’s Moskato Riddim (both distributed by the might 21st Hapilos Digital)—is no exception. Shot on location in Kingston Jamaica at the Chinese Garden in Hope Gardens the video was directed by RD Studios Jamaica with styling & makeup by Dexter 3D Pottinger. “In terms of the concept, it’s ‘Crouching Tiger’ meets ‘Kill Bill’ meets Jamaican booty/bumper pageant,” the DJ explained to Boomshots. (Things get pretty hilarious in that over-the-top pageant scene—with DJ Chi-Ching-Ching, producer Birch and comedian/radio host Dufton “Duffy” Shepherd as judges.) Later, in a heartfelt IG post, she elaborated on her creative spirit: “I was born different! I guess that’s why no matter what I always take a different approach to things🙏🏾🌟 & I wouldn’t change it for anything. I wouldn’t change me for anything💙” Neither would be. Boomshots is proud to premiere this very special video. Video After The Jump… Read more »

Tificles Sprays Them Haters With Lyrical Aerosol

“Guess that’s why they mad when Tifa win.” If there’s anyone who has never been afraid of addressing her haters then you gotta give the title to the princess of dancehall. Over the course of her career, Boomshots have had many reasoning sessions with Tifa, and she always keeps it real as far as what’s going on. Whether you refer to haters as “enemies,” “frenemies,” “badmind,” or “grazmites,” there are numerous ways to describe those individuals who impose their jealousy, envy, and greed on those around them. There is a reason why Jah Cure sings about “Wicked people and badmind lurking in the dark.” What makes people embrace these deadliest sins? Some may say that others can’t stand to see you flourish or can’t wait to swoop in and take credit for your hard work. If you can relate to this concept just realize that you are not the first person to feel this way—nor will you be the last. If you’re a firm believer in God you may believe that you will be just fine if you can only stay strong because fake people always fall by the wayside in the end.  In her latest mixtape Tifa appears on the cover spraying aerosol poison on an assortment of roaches. Press play to hear her call out the people who have “robbed” her and pretended to be her “friends.” She even sends out a special warning to watch out for anyone  calling themself your “family.” ZJ Chrome keeps the beats fresh—including recent joints from Drake and Rihanna—to provide a canvas for Tifa’s real talk about sex, dating, overcoming haters, handicaps, and industry politricks. At the end of the day she sets the record straight she can still create hits and make money—so  don’t bother playing with her. If you are a hater, unless you are a “dunce,” then the message in the title is crystal clear—you have been warned! After you give the tape a good listen, check out some of our classic Tifa interviews for context. Audio & Video After The Jump…

She Wine Sweet Like Moscato, Bubble Bubble Like a Champagne

The last time we caught up with Tifa back in January she warned us that 2014 was going to be a crazy year. You think she was jokin’? In the past six months the dancehall diva has signed a deal with Island King records, launched a fly official website, announced a brand-new line of signature headphones, and just yesterday she rolled through Hot 97 FM  in New York City where her latest single “Bak It Up” is getting nuff spins. You can catch her  interview with Ebro, the station’s PD, this morning. There’s even talk about booking her for Hot 97’s annual “On Da Reggae Tip” show this September. That’s a long ways away though. Next week it’s all about Reggae Sumfest. Yes, Tifa will be performing on the big stage on Dancehall Night (that’s this coming Thursday!) And you already know we’re gonna make sure to catch up with her down in MoBay. But right now let’s get into the official video for her latest banger. HEAR THIS: Tifa "Taste Good"

Her Name’s Always In Some People Mouth—Must Be Sweet Like A Lollipop

Last time I chatted with Tifa she had a lot to address. As she herself put it, “if nobody knew who Tifa was, they do now.” The Dancehall Princess has been getting lots of word-of-mouth advertising, the kind you don’t have to pay for—cause hate is the new love. Over the last few months Tifa’s had to deal with a lot of heat, and it seems like 2013 is all about the get-back. In true dancehall stylee Tifa’s churning out the tunes—first came “Champion Bubbler,” then “Why Yuh Mad,” then “Hypocrite Smile” and now this banger on the Washroom Entertainment label. Pour it on!! If you ain’t got the message yet then sumfin’ wrong. She’s spinning it around & serving it up to her haters on a platter. “My name must taste good cause its always in your mouth,” Tifa chats. If you think about it, it makes sense. You only put things in your mouth if you enjoy them. There must be some voracious appetites out there. In this case T.I.F.A is a delicacy so mouthwatering your mind cannot move even slightly from having it. She even has a line for the gluttinous: “Chew pon me name till you sick.” Audio After The Jump… Read more »
