Lost Tape From Steely & Clevie’s Studio One Sessions

This is a pretty good week for Richie Stephens. First came news that Rihanna’s producers had sampled his “Sail Away” riddim for her latest duet with Drake. (In other words Pot of Gold Productions must nyam some good food.) Now he’s seeing the release of a 14-year-old recording project—and the tune sounds nice! Stephens recorded this cover of the Studio One classic “Rolling Down” back in 1992 when ace prodcers Wycliffe “Steelie” Johnson and Cleveland “Clevie” Browne were working on the album Steelie & Clevie Play Studio One Vintage. Released on Heartbeat Records in 1992, that album would go on to score a major chart hit with Dawn Penn’s “No, No, No,” but the whole album was wicked. Somehow this recording got misplaced on one of the studio reels and was recently rediscovered while SilverHawk Sound was getting its dub collection back into order. (More on that later, but all dibby dibby soundbwoys you have been warned.) In the meantime let’s rock and groove to the voice of Mr. Richie Stephens singing a heartical Studio First selection. Cue the trombone Mr. Hornsman! Video After The Jump… Read more »

Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

Melanie Fiona Picks Her 10 Favorite Reggae & Dancehall Songs

The Grammy-Winning R&B Star Is A Bashment Girl At Heart

Melanie Fiona is best known for heart-wrenching hits like “It Kills Me” and “4 A.M.,” which have made the soulful singer a major star among American R&B fans. The two-time Grammy winner grew up in Toronto as the daughter of first-generation Guaynese immigrants. Her Caribbean influences have always been clear to the educated ear, from her dramatic vocal delivery to specific songs like “Somebody Come Get Me,” which was released under her old nom-de-reggae Syren Hall, as well as “No Cigarette Smoke,” her smoldering duet with Stephen Marley. Melanie continues to flaunt her Caribbean colors on “All My Love,” a new reggae-flavored duet with Toronto soul singer Glenn Lewis. Listening to the song there’s no mistaking the fact that Melanie’s Caribbean roots run deep. So we thought it would be cool to ask her to pick her top 10 reggae and dancehall tracks. Her picks speak volumes about her musical taste, her artistic temperment, and (dare we say it?) MF’s wild side. Click through the gallery above to check out Melanie’s selections and then read her candid conversation with Reshma B. Video And Interview After The Jump… Read more »

WATCH THIS: Richie Stephens & Gentleman Speak On Their New Album

Richie Stephens & Gentleman Talk International Collaboration with Winford Williams at “OnStageTV”

Sometimes the best collaborations just happen when you least expect it. In the case of Richie Stephens and Gentleman, it began with a tragedy. Richie Stephens’ son, Demar Graham, also known as Copper Cat, was shot down in front of his house and passed away. As a way to help ease the singer’s pain, the German reggae star Gentleman invited Stephens to come tour with him for a bit and they created the very popular single, “Live Your Life.” The single received such positive feedback that Stephens and Gentleman decided to get to work and make an album together. Finally ready to share with everyone their highly anticipated album, Stephens and Gentleman decided to head to OnStageTV to share the good news. Video after the jump…
