The colorful venue, included an array of red, gold, and green walls, adorned with Lion of Judah flags. At the stage center was an enlarged poster of Haile Selassie I The First. There were no fancy pyrotechnics or live band. The deejay juggled strictly conscious songs, including many Bob Marley tracks, which reminded the crowd of why they were there. Each performer sang with one mic, no background singers. The deejay dropped the riddim and each artist put their best rendition forward. There was a variation of overall sound and vocal expertise, however, there were notable performances by Patrick Junior De Minister, Empress Idama, Ablona, Bobo Natural, Jahfrica (of Spragga Benz’s Red Square Productions), Zebulun De Counselor, I-ras Original, and Abajonai Kushites.

I-ras performed an original track entitled “Sweet Reggae Music” which sparked much dancing, as the crowd cheered for more. Artist Zebulon De Counselor brought down the house with his call to action song ” Crying Out For Peace.” Empress Idama belted out powerful vocals with “More Love.”

Notable Bob Marley covers included Patrick Junior De Minister’s spiritually moving performance of “Time Will Tell.” While he sang, the noisy crowd went quiet and still. It was a goosebumps, hair-raising, rendition.

Elijah Rocq performed fan favorite, “Redemption Song” with background music and in Acapella style.

It was great to attend the 7th Anniversary for “Kush Wednesdays,” an event that provides a weekly platform for local Brooklyn artists to shine, and which honored Bob Marley in an authentic way.
