The Cool Ruler—Gone But Not Forgotten

Gregory Isaacs, One Of Reggae’s Immortal Vocalists, Dies At Age 60

Gregory Isaacs died this morning at the age of 60 after a battle with lung cancer.

Described by The New York Times as “the most exquisite vocalist in reggae,” Mr. Isaacs was a prolific songwriter—perhaps best known for his smash hit “Night Nurse,” recorded with the Roots Radics band, which he helped assemble in the 1970s.

He played a major role in the classic reggae film Rockers, established the African Museum record label, and is survived by his son Kevin, also a recording artist. Check out Gregory’s full obit in the New York Times. Nuff respect Mr. Isaacs.

During a 2001 interview, Gregory spoke of how he’d like to be remembered: “Look at me as a man who performed works musically. Who uplift people who need upliftment, both mentally, physically, financially—all forms. Who told the people to live with love because only love can conquer war. And to understand themself so they can understand others.”
