Can This Nigerian-Egyptian Charmer Become The African Ashanti?

Born in Cairo, Egypt to a Nigerian Father and an Egyptian mother, Asmaa Idrisu spent her young adult years shuttling between Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and Egypt. In the fall of 2009, she moved to Nigeria to pursue her singing/song writing career under her stage name AiRis. In the spring of 2010 she created AiRis Music, her own record label. Her style of music is alternative pop and soul music with various cultural influences, specifically African. AiRis has developed a heavy fan base in Africa and is just starting to make inroads in Europe and North America. Last October she tore up the official after party for the 49th Nigerian Independence Day Celebration at Club Blvd in NYC, hosted by Wale.

AiRis’ breezy debut single “Without You” was produced by the young Nigerian hitmaker Chino Ojunta of C17 Music. In video—directed by BET Award winning director Adam Rush and shot on location in Miami—is giving you African Ashanti. Keep an eye on this one. Her bewitching blend of Afro-pop and soul is a win-win.
